Madagascar Appoints New Premier
(MENAFN) Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina announced the appointment of military General Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo as the country’s new prime minister on Monday.
This decision follows the dissolution of the previous government just a week earlier, a move triggered by escalating anti-government demonstrations over prolonged shortages of electricity and water.
Zafisambo takes over from Christian Ntsay, who, along with the rest of the administration, was removed in Rajoelina’s attempt to address the “Gen-Z” driven mass protests.
These demonstrations, largely coordinated via social media platforms, reflect mounting public frustration and demand for immediate change.
"I have decided to appoint Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo as the new prime minister. He must be capable of restoring order and regaining the people's trust," declared President Rajoelina during an address from the presidential residence in Antananarivo.
He emphasized that the newly appointed military leader is expected to serve the population with honesty and dedication.
Before his new role, Zafisambo served as head of the military Cabinet in the prime minister’s office from 2021.
His appointment comes at a tense moment, as nationwide protests have entered their third consecutive week, with persistent calls for President Rajoelina’s resignation.
Despite the political unrest, the president reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to improving vital infrastructure and services.
He stated that his administration remains focused on ensuring the delivery of electricity and clean water, which he considers top priorities for the Indian Ocean island nation.
